What to Request in a Bulk Edible Oil COA Before Shipment
You protect product quality by checking a short list of numbers on the Certificate of Analysis before the container is loaded. This guide lists the parameters to request for refined edible oils and the steps that catch a lot mismatch early.
Must-Have Parameters on Every COA
Free fatty acid (FFA) ≤ 0.1% for refined industrial oils
Peroxide value ≤ 1.0 meq/kg
Moisture ≤ 0.1%
Smoke point appropriate for your frying temperature
Fatty-acid profile (especially for high-oleic or low-erucic grades)
Lot / batch number that matches the packing list and bill of lading
Grade-specific claims you can request for your oil type: lower erucic acid for low erucic rapeseed oil, high oleic content for sunflower grades, and FFA at or below 0.1% for refined peanut oil and refined soybean oil bulk supply.
Why These Numbers Matter
Elevated FFA signals early hydrolysis. A rising peroxide value is the first warning of oxidation. Both accelerate during continuous frying and shorten oil life, so the numbers on the COA tell you how much usable fry life you are actually buying.
Practical Verification Steps
Ask for the COA of the actual production lot, not a generic sample.
Confirm FFA and peroxide value meet the contracted limits.
Check moisture and any grade-specific claims (oleic acid, erucic acid, and similar).
Match the lot number across COA, packing list and shipping documents.
Keep a retain sample when volume or risk profile calls for third-party testing.
You define the limits in the purchase contract; every shipment arrives with a COA that shows those limits have been met.
